Welcome to Spanish Class!

 General Academic Goal

Sra. Palumbo
PRE K to  to 4th Grades

                                                                                               La Bandera de Mexico

During the month of May (mayo),  the students will continue with their study of seasons, colors,
and special celebration days. One important day is Cinco de mayo!  We will learn about the history
and pride of the Mexican people surrounding this day!  Fantastico!

New words: Mariachi, el sombrero, Puebla, la guitarra, Francia, and la bandera.

The students will continue to practice using the Spanish-language calendar, days of the week,
and months of the year. In addtion, we will study the following units: La Familia, La Ropa, and La Comida.

We will begin to recognize flags of some Spanish-speaking countries, and create our own with color words
in Espanol. We will continue our study of geography as we gain more understanding of the culture as well
as the language of these countries.  Magnifico!

                                     *   Where in the World is ...........Centroamerica?  El Caribe?  Sudamerica? *

                                                                                          5th to 8th grades

The students are working very hard as they move toward expanding their vocabulary for everyday, real-life conversations.
We will venture into some Spanish-speaking parts of the world in our geography and map skills studies. They will learn
about a Spanish LaPlaza, El Mercado, and other settings in and out of school. They are beginning a unit on travel and sports
and hobbies.  The students will be "travelling around the world to visit Spanish-speaking countries, and use their passports
 at each stop.  Fantastico!

We will be reading short stories and poems in Espanol and learn more about Cinco de Mayo--including geography, history,
and cultural aspects of the big celebrations that take place in Mexico as well as in some parts of the United States.  Que bien!

Ten minutes of focused studying and memorization at home will  help promote proficiency in the target language.
In addition, we will practice speaking and listening in Spanish during classtimes. Through teacher presentations,
student-prepared dialogues, and other listening activities our goal is to use and hear the language frequently.
This enhances the students' efforts in learning a second language by gaining confidence and practice in multiple ways.

We will be having a quiz or "check" on some Wednesdays or Thursdays depending on when the class meets.
I will announce the quiz date, what will be included on it, and also a classtime review prior to quiz date. I also encourage
students to ask questions, and spend time going over grammar and vocabulary before each quiz. It will be related to the
topic of the week, a cultural event, or the lesson presented in that day's class.  Homework is assigned almost everyday
we have class, and relates to the vocabulary or the grammatical structure that we have just studied , a cultural topic, or
geography with newly acquired Spanish-language terms.

The students will also be taking notes in their Spanish notebooks during every class on topics of study, vocabulary, and
important grammatical areas to use for reference in test prep.
