Welcome

Welcome to the Physical Education program at St. Joseph School. The Physical Education program will be active, fun and safe. I want every student to participate, listen, cooperate, give their best efforts and have fun.

General Academic Goals

Gym is offered to all grades Pre-K to 8th. The Pre-K to 3rd grade program will stress skills development and games that will improve gross motor skills, locomotor skills and stretching/flexibility drills. The 4th to 8th grade program will stress fundamental sports skills development, modified games and contests and stretching/flexibility drills. Grades 4 thru 8 will also prepare for the new St. Joseph School Physical Fitness Challenge.

All classes will help to improve students’ cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, strength, balance, coordination and teach cooperation and respect.

Rules and Practices

A safe gym class is the first priority. To accomplish this, the following rules must be followed:
1. Enter the gym and go to assigned floor spots for attendance.
2. Learn and understand fire drill and code red procedures.
3. Appropriate St. Joseph School gym attire is mandatory. No jewelry is to be worn.
4. All equipment must be used appropriately at all times.
5. Listen and follow all instructions.
6. Exhibit good sportsmanship and cooperation at all times.

Upcoming Events

June, 2011

In June, pre-school and grades K thru 3 will continue to work on stretching/running/skipping and and ball catching/throwing skills.  We have progressed to working with small balls exclusively and we hope to be playing catch soon.  New games will be introduced.  Some classes will play dodge ball and speed ball.  Wiffleball will begin as soon as we master catching.  Grades 4-8 will continue stretch and to play speed ball and scatter ball as well as play Wiffleball.
AS  WHEN CONDITIONS ALLOW, SOME CLASSES WILL HAVE GYM OUTDOORS.  Please make sure your child is appropriately attired in the event we go out to the playground for gym.

FIELD DAY WILL BE HELD ON MONDAY, JUNE 13TH.  (Raindate: Tuesday, June 14th).  MR. DENNING IS LOOKING FOR SOME PARENT VOLUNTEERS TO HELP ON THAT DAY.

The theme for Field Day this year is "Superheroes".  The children will be divided into 6 groups, each representing a super hero.  The groups will compete in various events and accumulate points toward an overall Field Day Champion.  Events will include some relay races, a sack race, "kill the umpire" sponge throw, a lacrosse shooting contest and several others.  Information on Field Day will come home in the Tuesday envelope on June 7th.

The Parent Connection

I have sent home a brief note explaining my expectations for the school year. Please review and if you have any questions/concerns, please contact me. Parent volunteers may be needed from time to time to help supervise certain activities as well as to help with Field Day. On these occasions, a request will be sent home in the weekly envelope. Please keep Mrs. Fields and myself updated on any medical conditions or concerns. I will be in the school Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00am to 2:30pm. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. I will return all calls in a timely manner.

             THE SJS PHYSICAL FITNESS CHALLENGE
All students grades 4 through 8 have set their baseline scores for the Challenge in October.  We continue to work each class to improve the elements of the Challenge.  In January, will will have a mid-term assessment of how we are progressing.

Certificates for meeting the Challenge will be given out at the end of the school year.
