MUSIC TEACHER  973-543-7474, X314

Welcome

Welcome to the world of music! “Catholic education has always understood the
central role of arts education in the formation of the whole person. Students who
are privileged to educational excellence in a Catholic school setting have the same
rights to a balanced, comprehensive, and sequential program in the study of music,
as do children in all schools. In addition, the Catholic school students, who also
“learn by doing,” should be granted experience of music as a primary spiritual and
community-forming resource. Students in Catholic schools should know the joy and
essential nature of music in worship and the rites, and know the power of sung
prayer early in their lives. Quality music education coupled with solid integration
of liturgical music provides the Catholic student a unique opportunity for a
complete education in the arts.”

Musicians.)

General Academic Goals

Music is offered to all students in Grades Pre-K through 8, once a week for 45
minutes. The music curriculum is based on the Silver Burdett Ginn series “The Music
Connection,” which provides textbooks for each grade level along with accompanying
listening selections on performance CD’s. The music program also incorporates
components of music history, music theory, music appreciation, music and movement
along with the art of singing.

Rules and Practices

All students in Grades 5-8 are required to keep a music notebook. These
notebooks are graded according to their thoroughness and neatness. Participation in
class as well as focused behavior with a positive attitude are all important aspects
of a student’s grade. Respect for the teacher and each other is expected at all times.

St. Joseph School Choir

All children in Grades 2-4 are invited to join the Children’s Choir. This
choir rehearses during school hours and sings once a month at the 10:30 am Mass on
Sunday. The criterion for participation as a choir member is as follows:
1. Children must attend the choir rehearsals.
2. Children are expected to sing at all St. Joseph School Masses.
3. Children are expected to sing at all Family Masses.

The Christmas Play

All students in Grades PreK-4 participate in the annual Christmas play. This year our Christmas musical was 'Archangel Gabriel's Awesome Adventure."  It was presented on December 14th in the school gymnasium.

The Spring Musical

All students in Grades 5-8 participate in the annual Spring Musical.  "This year our production of Bye, Bye Birdie will take place on May 2, 3 and 4 at the Motherhouse of The  Sisters of Christian Charity . This show is always a highlight of the school year for the uppergrades, enjoyed by both students and parents alike.  This show will mark St.Joseph School's 13th year production of a musical!
