Social Studies Curriculum and Policies

The framework for the curriculum in grades 5-8 is based on both diocesan and New Jersey core content standards from history, geography, civics, and economics. Much of this curriculum is based on the importance of learning about the world around us and the understanding of global and national interrelationships. The utilization of differentiated instruction, the application of higher - order thinking processes and problem solving skills, and the integration of technology will be utilized to teach the social studies curriculum and to address the learning styles of all students.

Fifth Grade: Fifth grade students will begin the year with the comprehensive study of geography, including elements and skills. The remainder of the year will focus on the specific geographies, histories, and cultures of the Western Hemisphere: The United States, Canada, and the countries of Latin America. Using Microsft Word, students in fifth grade will design and create enticing travel brochures to Latin American countries.

Sixth Grade: After briefly reviewing the fundamentals of geography at the beginning of the year, 6th graders will study the Eastern Hemisphere. From ancient civilizations to modern-day nation states, the histories and cultures of countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa will be explored. Australia and Antarctica will be studied as well. Students in sixth grade will research one of the ancient civilizations studied in class to create and present a Microsoft PowerPoint project.

Seventh Grade: Seventh grade students begin the study of United States history from before the "First Global Age" to the post-Civil War era. Using Microsoft Word, students will create Revolutionary War timelines to reflect critical events of the war.

Eighth Grade: Eighth grade students will continue the sequential exploration of United States history from the post-Civil War period to the present day. Students will use Microsoft Publisher to create a website about a noteworthy American studied in class. This website, essentailly a variation of a historical biography, will include facts, pictures, a timeline of accomplishments, and several hyperlinks.

Throughout the year, students in grades seven and eight will complete several DBQ's (document - based questions). DBQ's pose questions based on historical documents. Students will analyze these documents, consider the information presented in them, and compose essays in response to the questions set forth.
